In order to better serve the community, the Carthage Free Library Trustees are planning to renovate and expand the building by approximately 3,400 square feet, from approximately 4,400 square feet to over 7,800 square feet.

The plan will have five priorities:

  1. Handicapped accessibility
  2. Additional program space
  3. Additional computer space
  4. General rennovations including a new heating/cooling system
  5. Increased energy efficiency due to reduced operating costs

There will be a new entrance with a wheelchair ramp and an elevator lift or elevette at the rear of the current building, connecting to a new wing. Two new handicapped accessible restrooms will be built in the new entrance lobby, one on each floor of the library. See the plans for the ground floor and first floor.

It is projected that the entire project budget will not exceed $1,100,000 and a Capital Campaign is underway to raise the needed funds. Dozens of volunteers are joining the Board of Trustees in efforts to secure funding. Sources of funding will include government grants, foundation grants, corporate grants, contributions from individuals and small businesses. Pledges will be accepted over three years with consideration of four years given to special cases.

The Campaign Brochure has a pledge card attached so you too can participate with a gift or a pledge! Call the Library at 493-2620 for more information!
