What is the Battle of the Books?

Book Cover

The Battle of the Books is a program for fourth, fifth and sixth graders who read from a list of 20 books selected each year by the North Country Library System Book Battle Committee. Teams battle for the title of champion of their local library by correctly answering questions about the books read by each team.

How Does It Work?

In the fall we invite local teachers and students to take part in the Battle for the Books. Teams are comprised of 3-4 students in 4th, 5th and 6th grades, but teams can include a mix of grades.

During the competition, teams will answer questions about the books they have read. Each question begins "In what book...?" The answers are always the title and author of books on the Book Battle list.

The winning team from our local battle will represent CFL at the regional competition in early June. At the regional competition, the top three winning teams receive medals and certificates.

When Is It?

Teams must register at CFL between January 2, 1012 and March 1st. The local CFL competition will be in May. Each team must have an adult "coach" -- a school librarian, teacher or parent who acts as the contact person for the team. The coach should schedule practice sessions and make sure team members are keeping up with the reading.
